Pokemon-Inspired Hat and Cowl

Make cold weather more fun!

I have 2 sons, and although they’re over a decade apart in age, they both have ALWAYS LOVED Pokemon.

I couldn’t resist whipping up a hat and cowl and sharing it with all of you so your kids of all genders, sizes and ages can have fun with functional items to keep them warm in cool weather!

Sizing: Fits kids ages ~2-4 years. Move up a hook size for the base to make it fit 4-12 years.

Making time: ~2 hours (1 hr for each piece)

Materials needed:

  • 4 mm crochet hook (4.5mm for older children)

  • Worsted weight yarn of your choice, I used Bernat Super Value and Loops & Threads Impeccable Solids

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

Stitch Glossary (US terms):

  • See here for a good instruction guide for basic stitches

    • ch - chain

    • sl st - slip stitch

    • sc - single crochet

    • sc2tog - single crochet 2 together (decrease)

    • dc - double crochet

    • magic ring (instructions here)

Pattern:

General note: when I do my dc rounds, I ch 2 and dc in the NEXT stitch, not the same stitch. Then I finish in the same stitch as the ch 2 and sl st with the first dc. This creates a slight arc where the rounds join but I find it to be the cleanest way to do dc in the round. The other option is to ch 2 and dc into the same stitch. Whichever way you do it, make sure you count your stitches to ensure you're not adding an extra stitch to the row or missing a stitch!

Hat:
Base, starting with red yarn
Round 1: Ch2, 12 dc into a magic loop, sl st to join [into top of beginning ch2, the ch2 does not count as a stitch throughout] (12 st)
Round 2: Ch2, 2dc into each st, sl st to join (24 st)
Round 3: Ch2, *2dc into next st, dc into next st* repeat to end, sl st to join (36 st)
Round 4: Ch2, *2dc into next st, dc into next 2 st* repeat to end, sl st to join (48 st)
Round 5: Ch2, *2dc into next st, dc into next 3 st* repeat to end, sl st to join (60 st)
Rounds 6-11: Ch2, dc around, sl st to join (60 st)
Break red, join black
Round 12: Ch2, hdc around, sl st to join (60 st)
Break black, join white
Rounds 12-14: Ch2, dc around, sl st to join (60 st)
Round 15: Ch1, sc around, sl st to join (60 st)
Round 16: Ch1, *sc2tog, sc into next 8 st* repeat to end, sl st to join (54 st)
Fasten off
(Note: that last round just ensures a nice snug fit around the forehead)

Pokeball, starting with white yarn
Round 1: 6sc into magic loop, continue working around without sl st to join (6 st)
Round 2: 2sc into each st (12 st)
Round 3: *2sc into next st, sc into next st* repeat to end (18 st)
Round 4: *2sc into next st, sc into next 2 st* repeat to end (24 st)
Round 5: *2sc into next st, sc into next 3 st* repeat to end (30 st)
Break white, join black
Round 6: sc into each st (30 st)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

Assembly and Finishing
Place the Pokeball on the front center of the hat, centered on the black stripe.  Sew in place with a tapestry needle and weave in all loose ends.

Neckwarmer/Cowl:
Starting at top, with red
Ch 50 (loosely!) or the amount required to get the right size - you want it snug to their neck but able to get over their head!
Join yarn to work in the round, being careful not to twist the ch
Rounds 1-5: Ch2, dc around, sl st to join (60 st)
Break red, join black
Round 6: Ch2, hdc around, sl st to join (60 st)
Break black, join white
Rounds 7-9: Ch2, dc around, sl st to join (60 st)

And that's it!  A nice quick project.  Don't ask me how I know, but keep your kids away from ketchup when they're wearing it unless you want the white sections to become red!!  Who am I kidding, we can't keep boys away from dirt!

I see now that one’s birth is irrelevant. It’s what you do that determines who you are.
